Based on JPI survey results, January 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic with all the unrest it has generated has changed people's activities. The pandemic has changed the activities of city residents, limited the space for movement, and created distance with others. The changes are inevitable and have the potential to be permanent even after the pandemic ends.

The Jakarta Property Institute explores these potential changes, especially those related to the use of space. JPI held an online survey and was answered by 408 respondents spread across Jabodetabek and its surroundings. The survey also collected respondents' expectations when the pandemic was over.

As a result, respondents would like to see changes in the choice of locations for working, shopping and exercising when the pandemic ends. How big a difference will the use of space be and what impact will it have on the city?

Suggestions
  • The government provides flexibility to change the function of space for office buildings in Jakarta. Office building occupancy is likely to decline due to the desire for a combination of office and home as a place to work.
Office functions will change to more meeting rooms and socializing/team building spaces. The flexibility of space use allows for new job creation opportunities.
  • The government is revitalizing existing markets to increase public convenience. Because in this digital era, people still choose to shop at the market to fulfill their needs.
  • The government adds urban forests/green open areas that can be used by the community for recreation. Because people's patterns have changed, they don't want to go to the shopping place but return to nature.
